New England National Scenic Trail
Beginning in 2007 legislators in both Connecticut and Massachusetts introduced the New England Scenic Trail Designation Act. The bill was designed to add most of the Metacomet, Mattabesett, and Metacomet-Monadnock trails as part of the newly designated “New England National Scenic Trail”. The 2009 Omnibus Public Lands Act, signed by President Obama, established three new national scenic trails. The New England National Scenic Trail was one of those trails.
The NET as many refer to it covers some 235 miles from the shoreline town of Guilford, Connecticut along the Metacomet Ridge, through the highlands of the Pioneer Valley in Massachusetts to the Massachusetts/New Hampshire Border. The trail provides visitors with wonderful panoramic vistas, historic towns, farmlands, and forest walks. The Metacomet-Monadnock trail continues to the top of Mount Monadnock in southern New Hampshire, but this section of trail has not yet been included in the federal designation.
The New England National Scenic Trail runs along most of the Traprock Ridge and will serve as our guide for this journey.
